Editors Note: Our students come from all over the world. This story journals the adventure one student embarked upon to get to Stanford Summer.
The wonderful day that I have been looking forward to for the past month is finally here. Just have to double check my reservation before heading out. It’s another gorgeous, warm, cloudless night as I make my way to what is my favorite airport in the world. No, it’s not big, advanced or even particularly comfortable but it does feel like home and that feeling cannot be beaten. Oh, and unlike most other airports, it does not have grey walls so that’s always a plus.
Current time in Oman: 21:00, June 20th. Estimated Time to SFO: 33 Hours.
All checked in for my flight to my first flight LHR. Time to grab some coffee (Note: I am a coffee addict and coffee tends to calm me down before a flight) and head to my gate.
Time for one last look back to Muscat before boarding this beautiful 777. I am about to travel at a speed greater than what most humans in history have ever travelled and all I can think of is how awful this plane ride is going to be…sigh, if only it was as nice on the inside as it was on the outside.

One flight done, one to go…
Every time that I get on a plane to the United States, I’m reminded of this quote from Shawshank Redemption:
“I find I’m so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it’s the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain.”
I am pretty nervous, a little hopeful, really excited and am wondering if things are going to work out the way I want them to. Will summer session be fun? Am I making a mistake doing this? Would I be better off doing something else?
Current time in LHR: 10:30, June 21st. Estimated Time to SFO: 17 Hours.
New York! My favorite city in the world and a perfect day outside! And just one more plane ride to get to SF.
Current time in JFK: 13:30, June 21st. Estimated Time to SFO: 8 Hours.
CALIFORNIA! My first thoughts: This place is gorgeous and I cannot believe how nice it is outside. I’m already thinking about all the things that I could do outside including going hiking, biking, swimming or maybe even surfing. Im also a little apprehensive but its time to check in and get started!
