The role of religion in international war, conflict, and peace has long been an area of study in international relations, human rights, and religious studies, but one that has been approached with renewed vigor in the post-9/11 world. A new course, Religion and Politics (POLISCI 34S/RELIGST 34S), taught by Stanford Summer Session’s own Senior Assistant Dean, John Robichaux, explores the complex roles and interplay of religion and war, peace, and conflict on the international stage. Robichaux, a Harvard-trained scholar of religion and politics, has been studying the subject on five continents for sixteen years. “Students in the course will encounter a wide-range of approaches to the subject matter, as well as many case studies and challenging examples illuminating the significant challenges and range of diversity in treating the interplay of religion and politics in matters of war and peace. It is an exciting subject that has real-world implications at every turn,” he says. Religion and Politics is open to all Stanford Summer Session students, and may be counted toward the Stanford Summer Intensive Studies certificate in Human Rights, in addition to being cross-listed in both the Political Science and Religious Studies departments. more »» |
