Overview of finite element methods for nonlinear problems; Newton’s method; convergence, limit points and bifurcation; consistent linearization of nonlinear variational forms by directional derivative; tangent operator and residual vector; variational formulation and finite element discretization of nonlinear boundary value problems; model problems for nonlinear heat conduction and nonlinear hyperelasticity; enhancements of Newton’s method: line-search techniques, quasi-Newton and arc-length methods; data structures and Matlab coding of the finite element method for nonlinear problems.


ME335A or equivalent introduction to the finite element method.
