What is Love: Answers from Psychology, Literature and Philosophy

This course examines theories of love from psychology, philosophy, and literature. The syllabus covers the philosophy of love (e.g., Plato’s symposium) and psychology of social relationships (attachment theory, moral foundations theory). We will also read a variety of fictional love stories (poetry, film, a novel) and examine how the humanities and social sciences can work together to understand this most fundamental of human experiences. Readings include Plato’s “Symposium,” Freud’s “Beyond the Pleasure Principle,” Lewis et al’s “A General Theory of Love,” Bowlby’s “Attachment and Human Development,” Shakespeare’s Sonnets.
