Considered as Stanford University's fourth academic quarter, the Stanford Summer Session invites visiting undergraduate and graduate students to join matriculated Stanford students to experience a truly unique and transformative Summer Quarter.

Within eight weeks, Summer Session students take on challenging academics for college credit and a Stanford University transcript, submerge themselves in the culture of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, and make lifelong connections with peers from around the world.

Summer 2017 Application Opens in December

Stanford Summer Session admits visiting students in four application periods. Admission is offered to qualified students on a first-come, first-served basis, so interested applicants are encouraged to apply early. Please see the Application Deadlines table for additional details.

Choose from Over 170 Courses in 40 Departments

Stanford prides itself on offering students the opportunity to work with the best scholars and teachers in the world. Summer Session class sizes are typically smaller, giving students the opportunity to better engage with the University's dedicated instructors and faculty. Academic departments that offer courses during the Summer Quarter fall within the schools of Humanities and Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Engineering.

Please visit the Courses page on our website for a listing of courses that were offered in Summer 2016. An updated list of this upcoming summer’s courses will be available in February 2017.

Residential, commuter, or online–it's your choice. Live in residence halls on campus with fellow students, or attend as a commuting student if you are from the area or will be living off-campus for the summer. We also offer online classes for students who want to connect with Stanford from afar.

Stanford Summer Intensive Studies offer students the opportunity to use the Summer Quarter to engage deeply within one of eight areas of study. Take advantage of the chance to explore unique and important topics that will deepen your understanding of social issues. These courses are a part of the regular Summer Quarter curriculum and are open to all students who have completed any stated prerequisites. For many of the areas of study, academic work is enhanced by a speaker series featuring leading scholars. All students who successfully complete a Summer Intensive will receive a Certificate of Completion.

The eight areas of study are: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Computer Science, Water Management, Technology & Innovation, Human Rights, International Management, and Service Learning.

Course and activity details that satisfy the Certificate requirements can be found on the Intensive Studies page. As a reminder, specific Summer 2017 courses and any additional Certificate requirements will be available in February.
