Literature As a Different Measure of the World

How does literature present us with a very different way of understanding the modern, contemporary worlds, and shaping the future? A discussion of world literature, literature versus history, literature and human rights, and literature and rationality.

About the Speaker

David Palumbo-Liu is the Louise Hewlett Professor and Professor of Comparative Literature at Stanford University. He has written several books on literature and its relation to culture, society, and our understanding of the world, including The Deliverance of Others: Reading Literature in a Global Age. He has started the human rights website, teachinghumanrights.org, and has also written for The Huffington Post, Salon, The Nation, The Los Angeles Review of Books, and The Boston Review. He has taught Human Rights and World Literature (COMPLIT 57) in the summer for many years and enjoys meeting the many different kinds of students who join the class.
