Explore the powers of brevity. Reading in prose and poetry, mostly American: parables (Kafka, Borges); very short stories (Hemingway, Williams, Ozick, Oates); microfictions (Edson, Dybek, Bernhard, Shepard, Chine); fictionalized letters (Last Letters from Stalingrad); suicide notes (Woolf, O.J. Simpson, Cobain); fragmented history (Momaday's The Way to Rainy Mountain); poems of compression (J.V. Cunningham, Anne Carson, W.C. Williams, Louis Zukofsky, Ronald Johnson). Students' written work also experiments with brevity, taking the paragraph as the basic unit.
