Stanford Summer International Honors Program Students

 

SSIHP students will have the opportunity to attend intimate and engaging lectures given by some of our most prominent faculty. Some of our previous Distinguished Seakers have included:

John Taylor, Mary & Robert Raymond Professor of Economics and the Bowen H. and Janice Arthur McCoy Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution

Professor Taylor formerly served as the director of the Stanford Institute for Economics Policy Research, where he is now a senior fellow, and was founding director of Stanford's Introductory Economics Center. From 2001 to 2005, Taylor served as Under Secretary of Treasury for International Affairs. He is known for his research on the foundations of modern monetary theory and policy, which has been applied by central banks and financial market analysts around the world.

Douglas Osheroff, J.G. Jackson and C.J. Wood Professor in Physics
Professor Osheroff was the co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1996 and has been teaching at Stanford since 1987. His research efforts center around studies of quantum fluids, solids and gases at ultra-low temperatures.
David Palumbo-Liu, Professor of Comparative Literature and, by courtesy, English
Professor Palumbo-Liu is most interested in issues regarding social theory, community, justice, globalization and the specific role that literature and the humanities play in helping us address each of these areas. His current research includes studies of border art; notions of affinity in literature; race, media and visual arts and the aesthetics and ethics of globalization.

Patricia Gumport, Vice Provost for Graduate Education, Professor of Education and Director of the Stanford Institute for Higher Education Research (SIHER)
As Vice Provost for Graduate Education, Professor Gumport is a key member of the policy making team at Stanford and has extensive knowledge of University programs. She is known for diagnosing the complexity of contemporary pressures on higher education to change, and for helping higher education leaders respond appropriately while also striving to improve the quality and status of their institutions.

Stephen Krasner, Graham H. Stuart Professor of International Relations
Professor Krasner formerly served as Director of Policy Planning at the State Department (2005-2007) and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the United States Institute of Peace, as well as a member of the International Security Advisory Board for the State Department. His research focuses on issues of market failure and distributional conflict in international political economy, and the historical practices of sovereignty especially with regard to domestic autonomy and non-intervention.

Elisabeth Paté-Cornell, Professor and Chair - Management Science and Engineering Department; Senior Fellow, by courtesy, of the Stanford Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies
Professor Paté-Cornell is a world leader in engineering risk analysis and management. Her research has focused on the inclusion of both technical and management factors in probabilistic risk analysis models with applications that include the NASA shuttle tiles, offshore oil platforms, medical systems, and since 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S., and the assessment of intelligence information.
