Undergraduate & Graduate Students from Other Universities

Program Expenses

The Summer Session Office has created the following table to assist students in calculating their total Summer costs. Fees and charges listed are examples that are meant to be useful for budgeting purposes. It is important to view the Tuition by Units table and the Explanation of Fees descriptions for more information about each of these items and how personal decisions will impact the total amount due.

Student Living Off-Campus: Our sample budget is based on enrollment by a student who is either a U.S. citizen or an international student who does not require a Stanford sponsored I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant F-1 Student Status). For purposes of this example, the student is enrolled in 3-units.

Fees and charges that do not apply to all students, or that are based on personal choices made within a finite set of options (such as enrollment in additional units or the decision to purchase an on campus meal plan), are marked with an asterisk. Health insurance is automatically charged by the University, but may be waived with proof of coverage.

Fees shown should be accurate for Summer 2013, but may be subject to slight modification.

For purposes of this example, the student is enrolled in 8-units. International students with a Stanford sponsored I-20 must enroll in 8 or more units; U.S. citizens, or international students who do not require a Stanford sponsored I-20, may enroll in fewer than 8-units.

Tuition by Units

Tuition is assessed based on the number of units a student enrolls in calculated at the rate for their current program of study. Students who are still working toward an undergraduate degree are assessed undergraduate tuition. Students who have completed an undergraduate degree are considered graduate students and are assessed graduate tuition. For certification purposes, such as deferment of most educational loans, visiting undergraduate and graduate students should check with their university’s financial aid office to determine their individual enrollment requirements during the Summer Quarter.

All international students obtaining an I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant F-1 Student Status) sponsored by Stanford are required to enroll in a minimum of 8 units. The Summer Session Office will monitor student enrollment throughout the quarter to ensure compliance.

The following table lists Summer Quarter tuition rates at both the undergraduate and graduate levels:

Explanation of Fees

All fees are subject to change.

Application Fee. $75, non-refundable. The Summer Session Office does not accept application fee waivers.

Visa Processing Fee. International students for whom Stanford generates or transfers sponsorship of an I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for the Nonimmigrant F-1 Student Visa) will be required to pay a non-refundable visa processing fee of $75. This fee will be payable online as part of the acceptance process.

Tuition. Students must enroll in a minimum of 3 units. All international students with a Stanford-sponsored I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant F-1 Student Status) must enroll in a minimum of 8 units. Tuition is calculated at either the undergraduate or graduate rate depending on the student’s current matriculation.

Housing. University housing is available to Stanford Summer Session undergraduate and graduate students enrolled for at least 3 units. Students may apply for housing once they have received their Stanford ID number. The last day to apply for housing and be guaranteed is May 9, although students who apply after this date will have a high priority for room assignments. Rates vary by length of assignment and residence type. For further information, students should refer to the Housing & Dining page.

Meal Plan – 14 meals/week. Students whose Summer housing assignment requires a meal plan will be automatically assigned to a 14 meals/week plan. Students are able to modify this assignment via Axess. Stanford dining features “All-You-Care-To-Eat” cafeteria-style dining with a number of options suitable for almost any dietary need. Information regarding Stanford dining plans is available at the Housing & Dining section.

Document Fee. A one-time fee of $100 is charged to all students, except students who are returning to Stanford and have previously paid the Document Fee. This fee offsets the cost of maintaining student records, processing transcript requests, and other registration related services.

Telecom Fee. All residential students pay this fee, which covers the costs of telephone and internet service in each room. A number of add-on features are available by subscription from Stanford IT Services. Telephones are provided, but students must bring their own computers with them for in-room use. (Computers are available on campus for students who do not wish to bring a computer to campus).

House Dues. A fee of $75 is charged to all students in Summer Housing (with the exception of students living in Graduate Housing). House dues are for services not included in room rent, such as educational programs and social activities. This fee is subject to change.

Books/Supplies. The cost listed for books and supplies is merely an estimate. Textbooks will need to be purchased by the student and costs will be determined by the courses in which the student enrolls.

Post Office Box Fee. Stanford has a U.S. Post Office conveniently located on campus, and mail and packages sent via U.S. Postal Service are delivered to this on-campus location. Residential students who plan on receiving mail during their stay on campus are required to rent a U.S. Post Office Box. Arrangements are made independently, and fees are paid to the U.S. Postal Service.

On-Campus Parking Fee. Parking permits are available as needed from Stanford’s Parking & Transportation Services Office for commuting and residential students. There is no free parking on the Stanford Campus.

Campus Health Services Fee. All students enrolled in Summer Session are required to pay a quarterly fee to cover the costs of services provided by Stanford's Vaden Health Center. Students attending Summer Session courses are eligible to receive services at Vaden, which include:  primary care medical services, counseling and psychological services, and health and wellness programs.

Health Insurance Fee. All students enrolled in courses at Stanford are required to have health insurance. The University will automatically enroll students in Stanford’s Cardinal Care health insurance plan and charge $900 for the Summer Quarter. Domestic students who have their own coverage with a U.S.-based health care provider can waive this insurance charge by entering their plan information on Axess no later than June 15, 2013. Students should verify with their insurance provider that their coverage extends to service in the San Francisco Bay Area.

International students who have U.S.-based health insurance, or who feel their international insurance plan provides adequate coverage for the eight-week quarter, should request that their insurance company complete the Health Insurance Coverage Certification Form and forward it to Vaden Health Center for review. The Vaden Insurance Office staff will assess whether minimum standards have been met and inform the student regarding their decision. If approved, the waiver will be entered into Axess by Vaden Health Center. If denied, the student will be automatically enrolled in Stanford’s Cardinal Care health insurance plan and required to pay the $900 fee. The deadline to submit the Insurance Coverage Certification Form is June 1, 2013.

University Billing Information

Stanford University handles all billing for Summer Session. Students who receive a Stanford ID number prior to May 18, 2013 may receive their first University Bill on May 20, 2013. Statements are delivered digitally through Axess. Additional information describing the entire billing process, and available methods of payment, is available under the Need to Know tab. Scholarships and Financial Aid

The Stanford Financial Aid Office is not able to award financial aid to Summer Quarter students who are not enrolled in degree programs at Stanford. Students from other colleges and universities who will attend Summer Session should contact the financial aid office at their home institutions for information about Summer aid.
