Special Programs

Stanford-Peking University Program combines an intensive five-week language program at Stanford University (June 24–July 25) with a four-week practicum in Chinese at Peking University in Beijing, China (July 28–August 23). Intensive Chinese is offered at the first-, second-, and third-year levels. At Peking University, there are five levels of instruction based on proficiency. Each course is equivalent to one year of instruction. Classes meet for four hours of instruction, Monday through Friday. Download the Stanford-Peking application form. Call (650) 723-6355 or email asiansummerlanguage@lists.stanford.edu for further information.

Hopkins Marine Station offers a Marine Biology curriculum in the Summer Quarter. Courses are open to students in all majors and expand the coverage of subjects basic to all biological and environmental sciences and provide upper-level undergraduate and graduate students with courses in a variety of topics related to life in the oceans. Students are in residence at Pacific Grove and study aspects of biology that are not available on the main campus. Call (831) 655-6200 or email information@marine.stanford.edu for further information. The application can be found at the Hopkins Marine Station website.

The English for Foreign Students Program (EFS) in the Stanford Language Center provides courses to international students in English as a second language (ESL). From the end of June to the middle of August, EFS offers a 6-week Intensive English and Academic Orientation program for international graduate students and visiting scholars in addition to a variety of ESL courses for continuing Stanford graduate students. Call (650) 723-3636 or email tafowler@stanford.edu for further information. The application can be found at the English for Foreign Students Program (EFS) website. The EFS program also offers a support workshop for international students enrolled in the High School Summer College program.

Intensive Language Study
During the summer, Stanford’s Language Center offers a wide range of intensive language courses. Students preparing for careers in international relations, international trade and business, the foreign service, or academic careers find the intensive pace to be well-suited to summer study. In many cases, a full year of university-level language instruction is covered in eight weeks. No auditors allowed. The ratio of students to teachers is low, ensuring personalized instruction. The following languages are being taught this summer: Chinese (also see Stanford-Peking University Program above), French, German, Italian, Japanese, classic Greek and Latin, and Spanish. Email patricia@stanford.edu for further information. The application can be found at the Stanford’s Language Center website.

e-Learning Mathematics offers university-level distance-learning courses designed for disciplined, enthusiastic, self-motivated students who desire the flexibility and self-directed nature of this nontraditional learning environment. These courses are available to undergraduates or graduate students (or high-school graduates) enrolled in the Stanford University Summer Session Summer Quarter. The application can be found at the e-Learning Mathematics website.

Stanford’s Department of Chemistry offers an intensive eight-week course (Chemistry 33 & Chemistry 35) in organic chemistry which fulfills two-thirds of the organic chemistry requirement for most medical schools when taken in conjunction with the organic chemistry lab (Chemistry 36). Chemistry 33 is covered in the first four weeks. Chemistry 35 is covered in the second four weeks. Chemistry 36 is covered in eight weeks. Students may enroll in Chemistry 33 without enrolling in Chemistry 35. Students who have completed 33 at Stanford may enroll in 35. Chemistry 33 and 35 are equivalent to the first two quarters of organic chemistry offered in the regular academic year at Stanford for chemistry, premedical, biology, engineering, and science majors.

The Physics Department offers the sequence of Physics 28 and Physics 29 which fulfills, in ten weeks, the one-year college physics requirement with lab of most medical schools. This sequence is appropriate for biology, social science, and premedical students.

PHYSICS 28
