Student Resources
Athletics & Recreation
Summer Session students have full use of Stanford's extensive athletic
facilities. These include swimming pools, tennis courts, handball and squash
courts, a fully equipped gymnasium, basketball and sand volleyball courts, an
18-hole golf course, and facilities devoted to track and field, softball, touch
football, soccer, field hockey, and ultimate Frisbee.
The natural environment of Stanford and the Bay Area provides countless
opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and cross country running.
Further afield are recreational possibilities at the California
beaches and coastal range.
Bookstore
The Stanford Bookstore is a full-service retail facility for general, technical, and academic books, new and used text books, and course readers. Text books may be ordered online and held at the campus for pickup. A variety of Stanford logo apparel, greeting cards, souvenirs, and school and office supplies are available for purchase. The Bookstore Café has a full espresso bar and serves assorted beverages, food, and desserts.
Libraries
Participants have full access to Stanford's vast library resources and collections. Most of the humanities and social science collections are housed in the Cecil Green Library, which also includes the Social Sciences Resource Center, Humanities and Area Studies Resource Center, Special Collections, University Archives, and Media-Microtext resources.
In the J. Henry Meyer Memorial Library, students will find many computer resources, both hardware and software, as well as consultants at the Technology Services Desk. Meyer Library is the primary location for multimedia services and language instruction and also houses the East Asia Library. In addition to Green and Meyer, there are twelve research branch libraries on campus ranging from Art and Music to Math and Chemical Engineering. Participants are welcome to use all the research branch libraries.
Residential Computing
All dorm rooms are wired for Internet access. In addition, computer clusters equipped with Internet access are available in the residence and at various locations on campus.
Students are encouraged but not required to bring a personal computer, if they have one, which may be particularly useful for writing-intensive and computer-related courses. Networked printers are available in the dorm clusters with a small service fee per printed page.
Tresidder Memorial Union
Tresidder Memorial Union is a center
of community activity on the Stanford campus. In the main dining area you can
enjoy a hot meal or choose from a variety of salads, sandwiches, coffee, desserts,
pizza, fruit smoothies, or frozen yogurt. Tresidder Express offers sundries,
convenience items, and prepared sandwiches. The new Student Services Center
provides one stop information and service for everything from University billing,
to enrollment, and more. The Campus Bike Shop provides bicycle rentals and repairs.
There's also a ticket office
for events on campus and throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, a travel agency,
a hair salon, and a weight room with exercise machines.
Old Union
The newly refurbished Old Union building houses student lounge areas as well as
the Office of Student Activities, and the Associated Students of Stanford University offices.
Stanford's newest café, "The Axe & Palm," is also located in the Old Union.
Banking on Campus
The Stanford Federal Credit Union and Wells
Fargo Bank have branch offices on the second floor of Tresidder. ATM machines
connected to the STAR, PLUS, CIRRUS, MC, and VISA systems are available. Bank
of America maintains a versateller machine at Tresidder as well.
International Center
The Bechtel International Center
(I-Center) is a meeting place for students and Stanford senior research
scholars from around the world. Through social, cultural, and educational programs,
the I-Center acquaints students and scholars with University and community life
and brings them together in activities of mutual interest. The I-Center emphasizes
the international dimensions of the University through its advising and counseling
services, the cultural contributions to campus life by the various nationalities
represented, and by bringing the many opportunities for work, volunteerism,
study, and travel abroad to the attention of U.S. students.
Arts and Culture
Stanford offers opportunities for students and visitors to explore and participate
in a variety of cultural experiences during the Summer Quarter. The Music Department
sponsors both a Summer Symphony Orchestra and Summer Chorus which are open to
students and local community members. Both programs feature evening rehearsals
and a summer performance. Theater lovers are invited to enjoy the "Stanford
Summer Theater Festival". Jazz and electronic music concerts highlight the summer's
calendar of campus events, as well
as noontime café concerts, dances, international dinners, and special film
series. The Cantor Center for the Visual
Arts offers free admission to its 27 galleries and a walking tour of campus
sculptures, including one of the most outstanding Rodin
collections in the world.
Health Services
Vaden Health Center has a full-time
staff of physicians, mental health professionals, and nurses. It provides currently
registered students with medical care and counseling at no additional fee. The
cost of hospitalization, including in-hospital surgeon and physician fees and
emergency room care, is not covered by the Health Service program. Students
must carry Stanford's health insurance plan or provide their own individual
coverage.
Religious Life
The Deans for Religious Life and members of the Stanford Associated Religions work on a cooperative basis in the various areas of religious life at Stanford. Worship, counseling, small groups, seminars and social functions, promoted by this interfaith staff, are open to every member of the University community.
Student Disability Resource Center
The Student Disability Resource
Center provides information, referral, and services for students with physical
and learning disabilities. The summer programs are accessible to registered
students with disabilities. Individuals who need a disability-related modification
or accommodation (including auxiliary aids or services) to participate in Stanford's
academic courses should contact the Office of Accessible Education (OAE), Student
Disability Resource Center, as soon as possible. Notification in advance
of the summer program will enable the office to make reasonable arrangements
to ensure accessibility to the courses. For further information please contact
the Office of Accessible Education directly.
Visitor Information Services
Stanford University's Visitor Information Services provides information about Stanford and the surrounding area. Free walking tours are available daily from Memorial Auditorium.
Transportation: On-Campus
Bicycles are the most popular and convenient means of transportation for students living on campus.
Student-owned bicycles must have Santa Clara County licenses, available
through Transportation Services. There are bike shops on campus and nearby for sales, rentals, and repairs.
The University operates the Marguerite, a
free shuttle that runs year-round, Monday through Friday, on various routes across campus,
to the Stanford Shopping Center, to downtown Palo Alto, and (during commuter hours) to the two local Caltrain depots. Routes and schedules are available at Transportation Services.
Transportation: Off-Campus
Stanford University is adjacent to Palo Alto, a major transportation hub on
the San Francisco Peninsula. Palo Alto is connected by Caltrain commuter rail
to San Francisco and San
Jose, as well as cities in between. The Palo Alto Caltrain depot is also
a major transfer center for public bus service to points of interest in the
greater San Francisco Bay Area. Santa Clara County Transit provides public bus
transportation to the University, with stops at the front of the Main Quad and
the Medical Center. Parking and Transportation Services has a more extensive
list of Bay
Area transit resources.
Convenient transportation to Stanford from the San Francisco and San Jose airports is provided by a number of companies, including Super Shuttle (800-258-3826 or 650-558-8500) and Best Shuttle Service (866-333-2378 or 408-757-5499). They provide service to the front of the Main Quad and door-to-door. Reservations are generally required.
Amtrak also serves the area with a stop at the San Jose Caltrain depot.
