Introduction to American Art

Course Description

This course surveys the history of American art from the colonial period to the present, focusing primarily on paintings. Lectures and in-class discussions will introduce important artists such as John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jacob Lawrence, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Kara Walker, among others. Focusing on major themes in the history and culture of the United States, the course emphasizes developing and honing students’ visual analysis and analytical writing skills.
