Introduction to Computational Mechanics

Course Description

This course will introduce students to basic concepts in the mechanics of elastic solids and to the finite element method for the numerical modeling of engineering problems. Students will deepen their understanding of solid mechanics, including variational methods that underlie the finite element method, obtain MatLab programming experience by coding the finite element method for linear elasticity, and gain experience using a commercial finite element code.

Prerequisites

Mathematics: Basic (undergraduate-level) knowledge of linear algebra and Calculus. Mechanics: Basic (undergraduate-level) knowledge of elementary mechanics, including statistics and strength of materials.
