Over the last year, it seems that every week is punctuated by a new report of a contentious speech incident at an American college or university. Most recently, Stanford's own provost and dean offered in a lengthy web article, a staunch defense of academic freedom while maintaining a somewhat vague commitment to "defend diversity." How does this balance between individual freedoms and protection from indignities work in practice?
