Residential or Commuter

FIND YOUR COMMUNITY

Let us help you find the right option for your summer.

Residential students live on Stanford's campus during the program, while Commuter students live off-campus and commute to class. Both options are open to all Summer Session students, from high school through graduate.

We offer Commuters as many of the regular Summer Session experiences as possible, but being a Commuter is not the same as experiencing Stanford as a Residential student. We want to be sure you have all the information to decide which option is right for you.

As a Commuter, many Academic Programs and program-wide events will require an additional commute to campus to attend. Most excursions are only open to Residential students, as they’re designed to introduce the local area. For Commuter students who are likely familiar with Bay-area experiences off-campus, we've focused on creating connections to the academic and cultural life of Stanford itself.

Brace Yourself

Rent can be between $2,500 to $4,000 a month in Palo Alto. We get the desire to hunt for a better deal off-campus, but our housing plan is tough to beat.

Live on campus

As a Residential student, you can fully immerse yourself in campus life, living alongside current Stanford students and fellow visitors from around the world. Make new friends, expand your worldview, and continue the conversation beyond the classroom.

Commute to campus

Commuter students live off-campus and commute to class, with access to many of the same events, resources, and on-campus facilities as residential students. Local students can live at home and save some money, while still having the chance to connect with current Stanford students and visitors from around the world.
