Stanford Summer Session provides residential support at the Hopkins Marine Station located in Monterey – approximately 90 miles away from the historic Stanford campus. Summer Session is hiring one Stanford undergraduate student to serve as a live-in Summer Resident Assistant at the facility (SRA-Hopkins). The SRA-Hopkins staff member is an employee of Stanford University. The position is non-exempt part-time working a maximum of 15 hours per week.

The SRA-Hopkins must attend SRA training in person on Stanford's historic campus on June 18, 19, 20. They will then travel to the Hopkins Campus the evening of June 20th and be prepared to help with check in on June 21 and 22. This position is for a 9-week summer term, ending at 12 noon on August 25, 2025.

Note: the SRA-Hopkins role is hired by Stanford Summer Session, which is separate and distinct from Residential and Dining Enterprises (R&DE) or Residential Education (ResEd). Although the SRA-Hopkins position has many similarities to the RA position during the academic year under ResEd, the role is unique.

Program Overview

The Hopkins Marine Station has been part of the Stanford community since 1892. Although faculty conduct research year-round at the historic facility that sits on a knoll overlooking a marine sanctuary, courses are only offered to students during the Spring and Summer Quarters. In the Summer, approximately 22 undergraduate and graduate level students will live in the Station’s housing complex: four fully remodeled Victorian-style residences in New Monterey, just over half a mile from the research/teaching facility. At this time, only Stanford-affiliated students will be living in Station housing during the Summer Quarter.

Position Overview

The student hired for this role will serve as a resource for their residents. Their primary responsibilities include building community, assisting with lock outs, and helping to triage emergency situations in collaboration with the Station’s Assistant Director of Student Services. All SRAs, including the SRA-Hopkins, help develop educational opportunities that complement and extend classroom learning as well as plan recreational and social activities.

Essential Functions

Leadership and Community Development. The SRA-Hopkins will be a highly visible and accessible member of the Hopkins Marine Station community, and is expected to conduct themselves professionally, both in and out of the residence, at all times. Residents often seek advice from their staff, and therefore, the SRA-Hopkins should be able to be an active and effective listener, communicate support to students, and escalate issues of concern to the appropriate Station staff. The SRA-Hopkins should model respect for all people and work to build a community based on equity and inclusion.

Student Intervention and Crisis Management. The SRA-Hopkins is at the forefront of student interaction and is most familiar with students’ needs, challenges and concerns. As such, the SRA-Hopkins is expected to act as a mediator during conflict situations; identify concerns and refer students to appropriate resources; address inappropriate resident behavior and policy violations; and assist full-time Station staff during urgent and emergent situations (fire, health, safety, etc.).

Programming. The SRA-Hopkins is responsible for designing, planning, executing, and staffing a handful of programs throughout the summer, either social or co-curricular in nature. These programs may be organized for some or all students living in Station residence halls. Staff are encouraged to use their interests and passions, as well as those of their residents, to develop creative, informative, and educational programs. Programs should aim to enhance the academic and social experience of the community served, should be implemented throughout the summer, and should take into account the academic calendar and other trends observed in the community.

Terms of Employment

Stanford Affiliation. SRA-Hopkins applicants must be current Stanford Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors. SRAs may staff the summer immediately following their graduation in June (their terminal summer). Staff must be eligible for Housing.

Good Standing with University. SRAs must be in good academic standing with the University, meaning students may not have an elevated academic progress status (i.e., academic probation, deferred suspension, or suspension).

Living in Residence and Meal Plan. Room and board is part of the compensation for this position and all staff are expected to live in the residence hall room they are assigned for the duration of the assignment. Because the Hopkins Marine Station does not provide a Dining plan for the students in this residence, a meal plan stipend of $1,700 for the 9-week contract will be provided via payroll as part of the compensation for this position.

Outside Obligations. Staff may pursue outside work or other activities on- or off-campus up to 25 hours per week. SRAs are expected to avoid activities including other employment that may result in a conflict of commitment as outlined in Stanford Administrative Guide 1.5.2: Conflict of Commitment. Other jobs at Stanford, combined with SRA work hours, cannot exceed 40 hours per week. Staff must disclose information about their outside work or other Stanford jobs and courses to the Assistant Director for Residential Experience in Summer Session, and Summer Session professional staff may consult with SRA’s other employers as needed. Other jobs at Stanford, combined with SRA-Hopkins work hours, cannot exceed 40 hours per week. Staff should not have regular outside responsibilities that prevent them from participating in evening and weekend responsibilities.

After-Hours. There is no after-hours responsibility for this role. Students living in the Hopkins community will reach out to the SRA-Hopkins for guidance, support and assistance, but emergencies will be handled by full-time Hopkins staff.

Conduct and Policy Enforcement. Residential student staff will adhere to, administer, and enforce policies and procedures as outlined in the Summer Session Program Handbook, the Stanford Residence Agreement, and all other University and Summer Session policies. Staff must be willing to address, document, and handle disciplinary situations and serve in a position of authority in the residences and within the Summer Session community.

Alcohol and Drug Policy. Summer Session residential staff members are not allowed to consume, possess, or be under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, or controlled substances per Stanford Administrative Guide 2.2.8: Controlled Substances and Alcohol.

  • While serving in an SRA capacity.

Additionally:

  • SRAs under the age of 21 may not consume, possess or be under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, or controlled substances on campus at any time during their tenure.
  • SRAs over the age of 21 may possess and consume alcohol, but not marijuana or controlled substances, in their private residential space. They may not supply or consume alcohol with any resident or underage staff.

SRAs are highly visible role models and should conduct themselves accordingly. Failure to abide by the Alcohol and Drug policy will result in immediate termination of employment and suspension of housing and dining privileges.

Overnight Away and Guests. Staff may not be away from the Hopkins campus overnight without permission requested well in advance from the Assistant Director for Residential Experience, and the Station’s Assistant Director of Student Services. SRAs may have guests in the residence to the extent allowed by the Housing Agreement.

Training and Welcome Weekend. The SRA-Hopkins staff member will not be expected to attend the Summer Session Welcome Weekend (June 21-22, 2025) events on the historic campus. They will assist their Hopkin’s team with the distribution of room keys on Saturday, June 21, 2025 and provide other move in assistance June 21 and 22.

Background Check. Staff must successfully complete a LiveScan fingerprint background check before Summer Quarter begins.

Based on the stated Physical Requirements below, some positions may require the following:

Certificates and Licenses Required: Must possess and maintain a valid U.S. non-commercial Class C Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements: Ability to drive day and night.

Work Standards: When conducting University business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

Compensation

Compensation during the employment contract dates will include pay of $19.50/hour, housing (private room), meal stipend of $1,700 (paid as taxable income), and reimbursement for any standard student fees that appear on the student bill. This job is tasked at approximately 15 hours. The number of hours worked per week may exceed this amount as necessary. Please note that these are estimates only and you are not guaranteed a particular number of hours per week. Stanford Summer Session provides a $25/month cell phone stipend (pro-rated), which will be paid via Stanford payroll. Stanford does not reimburse cell phone costs.

Please note that the compensation is only for the employment contract dates; however, spring-to-summer housing is included for staff who are living on campus during Spring Quarter. As desired, students may explore housing and dining options outside of the employment contract dates (e.g., paying for housing and dining once the employment contract ends). At their discretion, R&DE may change your dorm and room assignment at the end of the employment contract.

California is an at-will employer. SRAs who are suspended and terminated are no longer eligible for the compensation of the SRA position, including housing and dining, effective immediately.
